Red dirt, red rock, and old-school tech into Hub 2

Uncle Joey’s is the harder of the ways into the Highland Area’s Hub 2, and the more interesting one. The dirt goes properly red through here, rolling straight over exposed sandstone outcrops and threading a tight corridor of oak brush under scattered pines. Call it old-school tech: nothing built, just rock where the rock is, a few off-camber moments, and a tread that makes you pick lines instead of coasting. It runs just under a mile with about 150 feet of descent against 60 of climbing. Machine-cut by Dante Harmony in fall 2020 during the Highland expansion and hand-finished by Kim Sallee, Brian Buell, and Stephen Glass, it’s held that character since.

Take it toward Hub 2 when the standard connectors feel like commuting. The slickrock rollovers all go at moderate speed, but they reward a second lap once you know where the grip is. Oak brush crowds the tread in midsummer, so expect some arm contact when it’s fully leafed out. It pairs naturally with the rest of the Hub 2 trails for a loop that keeps the red-dirt theme going.

The corridor twists through dense oak brush and juniper, shaded under mature trees in stretches, over red clay tread studded with embedded rock. Sage and grass fill the understory, and the openings frame distant valley and hogback views. It’s the more interesting way into Hub 2 for exactly that reason — the ground keeps changing on you.
