Half-mile learning loop at VIX Ranch Bike Park

This is where New Castle riders start. The Skills Loop is just under half a mile of gentle, low-consequence tread at VIX Ranch Bike Park, built so entry-level riders and kids can learn braking, cornering, and balance without much penalty for getting it wrong. Total elevation change is about 30 feet, which is to say almost none. There’s no exposure and nothing that demands commitment, just enough shape in the trail to teach a new rider how a bike wants to move underneath them. When a kid can lap it comfortably, they’re ready for Trail 1 next door.

Short enough that an adult can stand in the middle and see a kid the whole way around. Laps in both directions work different skills. It’s also a low-stakes spot to shake down a new bike or check your setup before heading up the valley. Close to town, quick to access, and ridable early and late in the season thanks to the low elevation.

The loop itself is smooth pink-red dirt swooping through native grass inside a white ranch-rail fence, but it sits at the doorstep of the whole VIX bike park — parallel wooden ladder ramps, a wavy rollercoaster skinny, tiered drops, and pump rollers all a few steps away. Park amenities ring it: shade pavilion, restrooms, a dog-bag station, the paved rec path. It doubles as event ground, too — Dirty Dozen mass starts stage here and the Rides & Reggae festival fills the adjacent lawn with tents and a stage. Full snow in winter and mud in the shoulder seasons mean it’s not quite an all-year loop.
